Bio- ja kiertotalouden alueellinen kehittäminen ja case-alueiden nykytila

Abstract

Maapallon alati kasvava väkiluku, rajattujen luonnonresurssien käytön kasvun kiihtyminen, biodiversiteetin köyhtyminen ja kasvihuonepäästöjen lisääntyminen ajavat muutosta kestämättömästä perinteisestä lineaarisesta talousjärjestelmästä kohti syklistä, kestävämpää kiertotalouden talousjärjestelmää. Kiertotalouden ytimessä on syntyvien jätteiden määrän vähentäminen ja jätteiden hyödyntäminen resursseina, puhtaampien energiamuotojen hyödyntäminen ja energiatehokkuuden lisääminen sekä ekosysteemiajattelu ja jatkuva arvonluonti.

Tässä diplomityössä keskityttiin tutkimaan toimivan kiertotalouden osa-alueita sekä kiertotalouden alueellista kehittämistä. Tutkimus suoritettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksen sekä empiirisen monitapaustutkimuksen avulla. Tutkimuksen kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tutkittiin kiertotalouden periaatteita, terminologiaa, liiketoimintamalleja ja arvoketjuja. Aihealueen pohjustamisen jälkeen kirjauskatsauksessa tutkittiin muun muassa kiertotalouden edellytyksiä kuten taloudellista kannattavuutta kiertotalouden liiketoimintamallien kautta, kiertotalouden haasteita, sekä myös kiertotalouden mahdollistajia kuten digitalisaatio. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osiossa tutkittiin kolmea eri Pohjois-Pohjanmaan aluetta bio- ja kiertotalouden näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen case-alueet valittiin niiden yritysten runsaan bio- ja kiertotalouden liiketoiminnan, kiertotalouden hanketoiminnan ja alueiden bio- ja kiertotalouden tutkimuksesta kiinnostuneisuuden perusteella. Empiirisessä osiossa selvitettiin case-alueiden bio- ja kiertotalouden nykytila.

Kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella luotiin tutkijannäkemyksenä kiertotalouden viitekehys, joka havainnollistaa toimivan kiertotalouden ekosysteemin rakennetta. Tämän jälkeen verrattiin tutkimuksen empiirisessä osiossa muodostettua case-alueiden nykytilan kuvaa kiertotalouden viitekehykseen, minkä jälkeen esitettiin case-alueille kehittämiskohteita suoritetun analyysin perusteella. Tutkimuksessa luotiin myös kiertotalouden alueellisen kehittämisen prosessikuvaus, jonka tarkoituksena on toimia apuna kiertotalouden liiketoiminnan ekosysteemin rakentamisessa.

Continuously growing population of the earth, accelerating pace of scarce resources usage, biodiversity erosion and increasing emissions of greenhouse gases to name a few are acting as a driving force in a change from unsustainable linear economy towards cyclic, more sustainable circular economy. Circular economy strives to minimize waste production and to use waste as a resource, utilizing cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy and to create continuous value and promote ecosystem thinking.

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to research different parts of functional circular economy and the development of regional circular economy. The research was done by performing a literature review and empirical multiple case study. Literature review was focused first on circular economy principles, terminology, business models and value chains. After building the basis of the topic of circular economy, the latter part of literature review was focused on economic viability of circular economy via circular business models, challenges of circular economy and enablers of the circular economy, like digitalization. The multiple case study examined three regions of the North Ostrobothnia from the circular bioeconomy point of view. Case-areas of the study were selected because of the regions’ companies’ plentiful amount of circular economy business, large amount of circular economy projects and the general regional interest in circular economy research. The current state of bio- and circular economy was analyzed in the empirical section of the research.

As a result of the analysis of the literature review, a circular economy framework was built to illustrate the structure of a functional circular ecosystem. The circular economy framework was used to compare the current state of the bio- and circular economy in the case-areas to the theory of the topic, and suggestions of further improvement were evaluated based on the comparison. Also, a general model for the improvement of regional circular economy was created as a research result. It was developed to act as an assisting tool when improving regional circular economy towards a functioning circular business ecosystem.
