Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines how students learn in different settings, including online and face-to-face classes, focusing on their preferred learning methods, how motivated they feel, and what kind of issues they encounter. The purpose was to discover how different learning settings influence student motivation and find out about methods of learning that are most effective. Semi-structured interviews were used to interview university students, i.e. graduate and postgraduate students, as part of the qualitative methodology. Braun and Clarke’s method involved reflection on the data and led to the recognition of four major themes: Online vs Face-to-Face Learning (OF), Preferred Learning Method (PL), Student Motivation and Engagement (ME), and Challenges and Solutions (CS). It was observed that physical presence at universities allowed students to engage better and build relationships with other peers, whereas working students liked the chance to study at their preferred pace, i.e. online. While, few students felt that online education is less engaging and more isolated. Students tried different ways, like controlling their time and setting goals to resolve these problems. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) guided the study, pointing out that autonomy, competence, and relatedness help motivate students. The results support the idea that mixing online resources with in-person teaching encourages students the most. The information in this research supports educators and institutions as they work on including all learners in their higher education environments.
