Exploring the representations of otherness in relation to humanity in science fiction literature : The Martian Chronicles and Project Hail Mary

Abstract

This thesis explores the representations of otherness, particularly those of alien others, in science fiction literature, and the connections between this theme and the representations of humanity are also considered. While otherness and othering are concepts often utilized in, for example, feminist and postcolonial theories, encountering otherness is a rather frequent theme in science fiction media as well. The topic of otherness is examined in the context of two science fiction books: The Martian Chronicles (1950) by Ray Bradbury and Project Hail Mary (2021) by Andy Weir, which represent different styles and eras within the science fiction genre, as well as different approaches towards the theme of otherness. From these works, especially the instances of first contact, interactions with something that is perceived as other, the different understandings of otherness and the relationships with it are under analysis. The aim is to ascertain how alien others and otherness in general are represented in these particular works, for example through the features that are used to convey such representations. This study is also interested in how the representations of humanity may be connected to the theme of otherness and, more specifically, what is conveyed about humanity in the ways that the other is interacted with. A comparative approach is adopted in examining and discussing these two literary works, and the method of thematic analysis is also drawn from and applied to literary research. Some aspects from different areas of critical literature studies, such as historical criticism and new criticism, are also utilized particularly in the way the works are regarded in relation to their surrounding contexts.

The analysis shows that The Martian Chronicles includes multiple different understandings on the concept of otherness and also frames humans as the other from the aliens’ point of view. Social and cultural criticism is also connected to the theme of otherness, as the work draws parallels to, at the time of its writing, contemporary topics and ones from real-world history, such as colonialism. Project Hail Mary, on the other hand, focuses on the theme of more personal communication between the two main characters, a human and an alien, drawing from the tropes of the genre with its straightforward yet engaging story while still constructing an imaginative, complex representation of an alien other. In conclusion, based on the observations and comparisons, science fiction can explore how the fear of the other may affect the connections with it, but also how the other can be seen as an equal regardless of the barriers created by difference.

Tämä tutkielma käsittelee toiseuden representaatioita ja etenkin avaruusolentojen kuvauksia tieteiskirjallisuudessa. Käsittelyssä on myös se, että miten tämä teema puolestaan liittyy ihmisyyden representaatioihin. Vaikka toiseus ja toiseuttaminen ovat käsitteitä, joita useammin hyödynnetään esimerkiksi feministisissä ja postkoloniaalisissa teorioissa, toiseuden kohtaaminen on myös varsin yleinen teema tieteisfiktiossa. Tätä aihetta tutkitaan kahden tieteiskirjallisuutta edustavan teoksen, Ray Bradburyn The Martian Chroniclesin (1950, suom. Marsin aikakirjat, 1953) sekä Andy Weirin Project Hail Maryn (2021, suom. Operaatio Ave Maria, 2022) kontekstissa. Nämä kirjat kuuluvat tieteisfiktion eri tyyleihin ja aikakausiin, ja ne myös käsittelevät toiseutta erilaisilla tavoilla. Teoksista analyysin kohteina ovat erityisesti ensimmäiset kohtaamiset ja vuorovaikutus toiseuden kanssa, erilaiset käsitykset toiseudesta sekä suhteet toiseuteen. Tavoitteena on selvittää, miten avaruusolentohahmot ja toiseus yleisestikin esitetään näissä kyseisissä teoksissa esimerkiksi niihin liitettävien ominaisuuksien kautta. Tämä tutkimus on kiinnostunut myös siitä, miten ihmisyyden representaatiot voivat olla yhteydessä toiseuden teemaan esimerkiksi sen suhteen, että mitä erilaiset tavat suhtautua toiseuteen ilmaisevat ihmisyydestä. Teosten tarkastelussa ja niiden pohdinnassa hyödynnetään vertailevaa lähestymistapaa, ja myös temaattista analyysia sovelletaan kirjallisuuden tutkimiseen. Joitain piirteitä kirjallisuuskritiikin eri suuntauksista, kuten historiallisesta kritiikistä ja uuskritiikistä, hyödynnetään myös etenkin teoksia ympäröivien kontekstien huomioinnissa.

Analyysi osoittaa, että The Martian Chronicles sisältää useita eri näkemyksiä toiseuteen liittyen, ja se esittää myös ihmisyyden toiseutena avaruusolentojen näkökulmasta. Lisäksi toiseus liitetään sosiaaliseen ja kulttuuriseen kritiikkiin, ja teos käsittelee kirjoitusaikanaan ajankohtaisia sekä historiallisesti relevantteja aiheita, kuten kolonialismia. Project Hail Mary puolestaan keskittyy enemmän sen kahden päähenkilön, ihmisen ja avaruusolennon, väliseen henkilökohtaisempaan kommunikaatioon ja hyödyntää genren tyypillisiä piirteitä sen suoraviivaisessa mutta vetoavassa tarinassa, samalla kuitenkin rakentaen luovan ja monitahoisen kuvauksen toiseudesta. Johtopäätöksenä havaintojen ja vertailun pohjalta tieteisfiktio voi siis tutkailla sitä, miten toiseuden pelko voi vaikuttaa sen kanssa muodostettaviin suhteisiin, mutta myös sitä kuinka toiseuden näkeminen yhdenvertaisena on mahdollista eroavaisuuksien luomista esteistä huolimatta.
