This thesis investigates integrating user needs into workplace design to support employee behaviour, work activities, and organisational practices in the context of evolving post-COVID-19 workplace design practices in knowledge work organisations. This study employs a research-through-design methodology, exploring theoretical models and co-design research methods to understand and enhance workspace support for users.
Through two case studies, this thesis research develops and evaluates workplace design proposals through a participatory approach. It presents a theory-informed framework that interconnects workplace experience and design. The framework considers employee experience through workplace satisfaction and need–supply fit, extending the model to include privacy, interaction, and atmosphere to comprehensively understand design requirements in various work situations.
The design module of the framework examines the impact of physical workplace design on workplace satisfaction, incorporating analytical and perceived dimensions of comprehensive design to understand spatial requirements and experiences. This thesis studies the perceived dimension through affordance theory and spatial atmosphere, which is connected to physical design via analytical comprehensive design through instrumental, aesthetic, and symbolic dimensions.
Empirical results highlight the importance of addressing diverse employee needs, with experience sampling indicating a higher need for atmosphere in collaborative and recovery situations. Co-designed workspace scenarios reveal a demand for versatile task-related spatial atmospheres.
Overall, this thesis contributes to the methodological development of workplace design research, integrating work environment research and design through a theory-informed framework. The research-through-design approach offers new tools to support understanding workplace design processes and outcomes.
Tässä väitöskirjassa tutkitaan, kuinka käyttäjien tarpeet voidaan sisällyttää osaksi työympäristön suunnitteluprosessia. Tarkastelun kohteena ovat tietotyöhön liittyvät työtehtävät, toiminta ja organisaatiokäytännöt sekä COVID-19-pandemian jälkeinen työtilasuunnittelu. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään suunnittelututkimuksen menetelmiä. Niiden avulla tarkastellaan osallistavien suunnittelumenetelmien ja työympäristötutkimuksessa käytettävien teorioiden mahdollisuuksia tukea erilaisia työtilanteita suunnittelun avulla.
Tutkimus keskittyy työtilojen osallistavaan suunnitteluun kahden tapaustutkimuksen kautta. Siinä esitellään teoriapohjainen viitekehys, joka yhdistää työpaikkakokemuksen ja suunnittelun, tarkastellen työntekijöiden kokemuksia työtilatyytyväisyyden sekä työtilan tarpeiden ja tarjonnan yhteensopivuuden näkökulmasta. Tutkimus laajentaa perinteistä yhteensopivuusmallia kokonaisvaltaisemman ymmärryksen saavuttamiseksi erilaisista työtilanteista. Yksityisyyden tarpeen lisäksi malli huomioi nyt myös työntekijöiden välisen vuorovaikutuksen ja tilan tunnelman, mikä mahdollistaa monipuolisemman lähestymistavan työympäristöjen suunnitteluun.
Viitekehyksen suunnitteluosiossa tarkastellaan fyysisen työympäristön vaikutusta työtilatyytyväisyyteen. Se tarkastelee fyysistä tilaa sekä analyyttisen että koetun ulottuvuuden kautta tilavaatimusten ja -kokemusten ymmärtämiseksi. Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee koettua työtilaa toimintamahdollisuuksien, eli affordanssi-teorian, ja tilan tunnelman kautta. Nämä koetut ominaisuudet yhdistetään tilan fyysisiin elementteihin analyyttisen mallin avulla, joka huomioi toiminnalliset, esteettiset ja symboliset ulottuvuudet.
Väitöstutkimuksen empiiriset tulokset korostavat, että työntekijöillä on erilaiset tarpeet eri työtilanteissa. Osallistujien suunnittelemat työtilaskenaariot osoittivat tarpeen tunnelmaltaan monipuolisille tiloille erilaisten työtilanteiden tukemiseksi. Kokemusotantatutkimus osoitti, että tilan tunnelman merkitys korostuu erityisesti yhteistyötilanteissa ja palautumishetkissä.
Tämä väitöskirja edistää työtilojen suunnittelututkimuksen menetelmällistä kehitystä yhdistämällä työympäristötutkimuksen ja suunnittelun teoriapohjaisen viitekehyksen kautta. Tutkimuksen suunnittelulähtöinen lähestymistapa tarjoaa uusia työkaluja työympäristöjen suunnitteluprosessien ja niiden lopputulosten ymmärtämiseen.
