Abstract
This chapter outlines the implications of relational contracts on a project’s front end and their importance for the success of the entire project. The client’s permanent organisation, the Project Management Office (PMO), and the project management team should have clear understandings of their respective responsibilities on the front end to enable collaboration in later phases. We have described seven managerial activities (project objectives and value definition, stakeholder identification and management, project organisation and governance, required competences, communication strategy, user requirement management, and collaboration methods) enabling early involvement and integration of stakeholders. The careful selection of methods under categories related to collaborative value creation (value engineering, leading people, operative process management, and data and information management) resulted in the fulfilment of their primary purpose as well as that of a secondary purpose related to the ‘focus on people’ mantra described in the literature, which may be more important in collaborative value creation in later project phases.
