Abstract
Children are an important user group of digital technology whose characteristics should be carefully taken into account when designing for them but who should also be empowered to shape technology development. Digital technology development should be introduced to children as part of their basic education. Usability is an important quality criterion of interactive products and systems that should be catered for whenever designing for someone else. Inclusion and sustainability are significant societal goals that children should be invited to address, through design and digital technology, among other means. This chapter explores how to design for and with children, addressing usability, inclusion, and sustainability. We showcase a set of digital technology development projects in which we have collaboratively with children ideated, designed, developed, and evaluated digital technology for various kinds of purposes. In our projects, education of children in design and digital technology as well as empowerment of children in the sense of motivation, decision-making power, and competence building have been underscored, in addition to designing for usability, inclusion, and sustainability. This chapter proposes a set of guidelines for designing for usability, inclusion, and sustainability with children.
