Abstract
Collaboration in inter-organizational construction projects can be enhanced through a variety of formal and relational collaborative practices. These practices can be categorized into formal and relational approaches. This chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the interplay between formal and relational collaborative practices in inter-organizational construction projects. The empirical analysis and illustrations of the two infrastructure projects offer insights into the ways formal and relational collaborative practices may be utilized and how they can complement each other. Importantly, the analysis reveals that the interactions and dynamics between these practices may differ depending on the collaborative approach employed. The results highlight four key themes related to the utilization of formal and relational collaborative practices and their dynamics: collaborative contracts, collaborative co-locational phase, collaborative coordination structures and roles, and collaborative scheduling and culture workshops, around which the dynamics of formal and relational collaborative practices are intertwined.
