Abstract
Coastal destinations are increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters, and this situation will only worsen due to the ever worsening impact of climate change. However, there is, to date, no research that has addressed the potential impact of these disasters on coastal second home tourists. This chapter seeks to fill this gap through a study of post-Sandy Fire Island, NY, USA. This is a unique second home destination located on a small barrier island, which is almost solely comprised of vacation homes and with many communities purpose built for tourism. Using the results of qualitative interviews, the chapter discusses the impact of place attachment on a second homeowner’s decision-making process post-Sandy, specifically in regards to whether or not to continue to retain their secondary residence.
