Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores the contextualism and urban integration of mosques in Sweden, focusing on the patterns and practices that shape their architectural and urban presence. The integration of mosques into urban environments in Sweden presents a unique intersection of architecture, cultural identity, and urban planning. Sweden, known for its progressive policies and multicultural society, has seen a significant increase in its Muslim population over the past few decades. This demographic shift has brought about new challenges and opportunities in urban integration and architectural contextualism.
The primary motivation for this research is to understand how mosques can be better integrated into the urban fabric of Swedish cities, enhancing their functionality and accessibility while respecting cultural and historical contexts. The motivation for this research also arises from the growing need to understand and enhance the integration of mosques within urban environments where Muslims live as a minority. This study aims to fill the gap in existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the architectural and urban integration of mosques in Sweden.
The research employs a qualitative methodology, including case studies of selected mosques in Sweden. Data collection methods include site visits, architectural analysis, photographs, and satellite maps. The scope of the study is limited to urban mosques in major Swedish cities, with a focus on their architectural features, materials, construction techniques, and their integration with the surrounding urban environment.
The findings reveal that successful integration of mosques in Sweden involves a combination of architectural adaptation and urban planning strategies. Key factors include the use of local materials, incorporation of traditional Islamic architectural elements, and consideration of the surrounding context. The study identifies best practices and common challenges, such as balancing religious significance with urban functionality and addressing community concerns.
The implications of this research are significant for architects, urban planners, and policymakers. The results provide insights into how mosques can contribute to the urban landscape in a way that is both respectful of their religious significance and beneficial to the broader community. Future research could expand on these findings by exploring the integration of wider types of buildings in diverse urban contexts.
