Implementation of generative artificial intelligence in a project-based company

Abstract

This study investigates how artificial intelligence can be used to support project management, as well as the factors that influence the success of implementing AI in a project-based company. The research was conducted in collaboration with a case company, and data was collected through interviews, other discussions, and the piloting of an AI application.

The increasing use of AI in the workplace brings new opportunities, but also risks and challenges to manage. Various organizations are now competing to determine how they can leverage AI, but it is crucial to also assess risks. The use of AI to support project management is becoming more common. In this study, project management professionals were interviewed about AI utilization. Their thoughts on AI and the future were mapped out, and the areas where they would like AI to support their work were discussed. This master's thesis presents what a project-based organization should particularly consider before starting to utilize generative AI. Many different factors influence the success of an AI implementation. In this study, the requirements for implementation were addressed specifically in the context of a project-based organization. The most important factors influencing AI implementation were identified as organizational readiness for AI, understanding of AI, especially its potential benefits and risks, level of change management and investment in it, and selecting the right AI solution.
