Tiivistelmä
This thesis explores cultural diversity and conflict among multicultural student teams at Oulu Business School. It utilizes a comprehensive mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses.
The study aims to understand how cultural differences shape interactions, communication styles, working cultures, and conflict-resolution strategies among students from diverse backgrounds. The qualitative analysis, which makes use of NVivo software, identifies key themes such as communication styles (direct versus indirect communication, language proficiency, and non-verbal communication), working culture (hierarchy, collaboration, and decision-making processes), cultural norms (work ethic, social interaction, and underlying values and beliefs), and conflict resolution approaches (mediation techniques and the promotion of empathy and understanding). In parallel, the quantitative analysis employs survey data to measure the prevalence and impact of these cultural factors on students' academic and social experiences.
Findings from both methods indicate that cultural diversity presents both opportunities and challenges, fostering a rich environment for learning and growth while also contributing to misunderstandings and conflicts. This research offers valuable insights into the complexities of intercultural interactions within a multicultural educational context, providing recommendations for fostering a more inclusive and harmonious learning environment.
