Abstract
This chapter is one of the pioneering studies which undertakes an exploratory assessment of the unique opportunities and challenges that financial technology (FinTech) presents for microentrepreneurs in Egypt. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with microentrepreneurs across various sectors in Egypt, our research uncovers the key benefits that FinTech offers, including access to credit, digital payment solutions, financial management tools, peer-to-peer lending, digital money circles, and safety. This study unequivocally demonstrates the empowering role of FinTech for microentrepreneurs. However, it also identifies their main challenges, such as high-interest rates, digital literacy, customer support, lack of digital infrastructure, and cultural (perceptual) barriers.
