Tiivistelmä
Preface
The road to becoming a world-class researcher can be long and contain many pitfalls. This book tells about my career, childhood, school and studies, starting with leading up to top research.
I grew up in Aittojärvi, Kiuruvesi, "in the middle of the nowhere", I went to school in Kiuruvesi, studied electrical engineering at the University of Oulu and did my PhD research at the University of Maryland in the USA. At the end of 1981, I founded the Machine Vision research group at the University of Oulu and did my doctorate in Oulu in 1982. Over the years, the group became world-renowned and very international in computer vision and pattern recognition research. My main research areas have been e.g. image texture analysis, Local Binary Pattern (LBP) methodology and its variants, machine learning and applications in different areas. After retiring in 2017, the main focus has been on writing two books about artificial intelligence, the first of which deals with the challenges of artificial intelligence and the second about how artificial intelligence will affect our lives in the coming years. In addition, I have participated in method research related to deep neural networks. The book also explains on a general level what machine vision and deep learning neural networks are, how cutting-edge research is created, and how hobbies and choices in civilian life help in a research career.
The appendices contain some general articles I have written, which deal with the importance of immigration in research, academic entrepreneurship, opinions on the university's administration and location, and promoting the success of the technology city of Oulu.
I used Google Translate program to help in translating from Finnish to English.
I wish to thank all those who have contributed to my research and topics covered in this book!
