Tiivistelmä
The development of mobile communications to the 5th generation (5G) and beyond enabled them to increase their outreach by addressing the needs of not just the human-centric user terminal but also of versatile machines. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) has become today one of the disruptive, enabling, and underlying many new services. In this context, the focus of the thesis is to study and empirically explore the performance and functionality of the C-IoT wireless connectivity solutions based on massive machine-type communication technologies (mMTC) and the 5G. The thesis work includes (i) a study of the commercial Cellular Internet of Things (C-IoT) and 5G compatible C-IoT modems, (ii) integrating and configuring C-IoT wireless module EXS82-W to enable internet protocol (IP) based connectivity from a Linux-based single board computer (RPi) within the 5G network run by a commercial mobile operator Telia or by the University of Oulu and 6G Flagship, (iii) developing the scripts allowing to characterize the network status and communication-relevant key-performance indicators. Notably, the designed in this work devices are expected to be further used as the tested user terminals allowing live observation of the status and performance of the test network.
