Synthetic toposcapes : a deconstructivist approach to a hydrotherapy retreat

Abstract

This master’s thesis project explores the principles of de constructivism through both theoretical and practical lenses. The research component delves into the fragmented architec tural language of Enric Miralles (1955-2000), focusing on his approach to deconstructivism and his manipulation of form and space. Miralles’ work, characterized by its disjointed and fragmented aesthetics, serves as a primary influence for the design portion of my thesis.

Drawing inspiration from Miralles’ fragmentation, I have de signed a deconstructivist-inspired Spa-Hotel located near the ski resort of Ruka, Finland. This project is divided into three interconnected yet distinct parts, each embodying the essence of fragmentation while harmonizing with the natural surroundings.

The hotel segment consists of several tall, glass-covered towers scattered in the forest. These towers, with their ir regular and fragmented placement, create a dynamic visual interplay with the forest, emphasizing the deconstructivist principle of disjointed harmony. The glass facades reflect the natural beauty of the surroundings, creating a integration with the landscape.

Near the hotel towers lies the main building. This build ing, accessible from a hilltop, cleverly deceives the vis itor with an apparent single-story facade. However, as one traverses the structure, it reveals itself as a four-story edifice cascading down a cliff towards Purnujärvi-lake. This building offers different functions: a restaurant, massage rooms, reception, and multiple spa pools. The architectural design emphasizes the cliff’s descent, mirroring the natural topography and creating a fragmented spatial experience that unfolds gradually.

A covered pathway connects the main building to the final fragment of the project: the sauna building. Situated at the lake’s edge, the sauna offers a secluded and intimate retreat, reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature.
