Tiivistelmä
Refining the steel composition is necessary part of the steel production process but it can be quite costly. That is why it is of interest to optimize alloying to eanble cost savings and to produce more efficiently different steel lots.
The aim of this study was to study what alloying elements are used in stainless steel manufacture and why. Of interest was also how and in which stages of the process alloying is done in the melt shop. Special interest of this study was in microalloying. New ways of alloying during the casting process were also discussed.
This study is a literary survey. The stainless steel manufacture process is first introduced, and the raw materials used including alloying elements are discussed. Secondly the different alloying elements and their different effects are shown. Lastly the execution of alloying is discussed, and new technologies are presented.
The results show that microalloying is usually conducted during ladle treatment by wire feeding. The aim was to research if microalloying during continuous casting is possible and the possible methods are introduced.
