Tiivistelmä
Urban segregation is a global phenomenon that is relevant in times of urbanization and migration. This thesis dissects this concept and explores it in a specific setting. In this thesis, urban segregation is defined as an entity, usually a community or a society, comprising both a neighbourhood and its residents and that entity’s segregation and/or exclusion from the other entities. The research question is: How can segregation be addressed with the means of urban design in a Finnish neighbourhood in Havukoski, Vantaa? The sub-questions are: 1) What is segregation in urban design? 2) How does segregation manifest in Havukoski? 3) What could be the proposed solutions for treating the phenomenon in Havukoski? The structure is twofold: 1) a literature review and 2) a case study of Havukoski. Part I is categorised into 6 chapters: the definition, dimensions, measurement, causes, effects and solutions of urban segregation. This section highlights the multifaceted nature of segregation and the importance of the definition of the term, which in turn, affects measurements and solutions. Part II explores Havukoski through three layers of time: the past, the present and the future. This part defines the state of segregation in Havukoski, studies the historical development of urbanization and housing estates in Finland, describes the current measures on segregation in Vantaa. Lastly, design solutions for the future are derived from the findings in part II and site analyses from part II. The design consists of design concepts, which are implemented in four locations on a more detailed level, illustrating the urban design tools in treating segregation. The design proposal supports the local economy, community, and inclusivity, fitting the plan into a site of a built heritage. This thesis explores segregation through neutral lenses, creating variety in the academic discussion.
